Upcoming Lecture

Hippos Lecture

Dr. Mark Schuler invites the CSP community to a lecture in the Buetow Music Auditorium on Wednesday, May 4, at 10:30am.  Titled Τετέλεσται, this lecture is a final report on the 20-year excavation project at Hippos of the Decapolis, overlooking the east shore of the Sea of Galilee at which the Concordia team uncovered an urban monastic complex centered on a healing cult honoring a revered woman. This lecture also marks the retirement of Dr. Schuler from the theology faculty at Concordia Saint Paul after twenty-eight years of service.

Emeritus Status

The CSP Digest from 2.17.22 included an announcement that the Board of Regents has awarded me Emeritus Status, the most important perks of which are that I retain library privileges and my university email address (mark.schuler@csp.edu). More importantly, this new designation reminds me that the transition is soon at hand.

Sabbatical ending

The end of my sabbatical has arrived. The task list is complete: LiDAR model of dig built and posted, final report done and published, courses rebuilt for the spring. My one regret is cancelling the Travel Seminar to Greece starting 1 January 2022. With omicron, there are too may uncertainties and too many risks. The decision was reasonable; but the disappointment remains.

Retirement

I have announced to my superiors that I shall retire from the faculty at CSP at the end of this academic year.

New opportunities for service and study await.

After teaching Hellenistic Greek at Concordia for 27 years, I was saddened early this year when the World Meteorological Association announced in March that they would no longer use the Greek alphabet to name hurricanes. Supposedly Greek letters like “alpha” and “beta,” from which comes the word “alphabet,” are too confusing.

So I was heartened today to read that the @WHO has announced, easy-to-say labels for #SARSCoV2 Variants of Concern (VOCs) & Interest (VOIs): letters of the Greek alphabet! Read more here.

Greek is back! It is not a dead language, even though these variants can kill.
